Wild Rumor of the Day: Justin Timberlake Will Star in New Battlestar Galactica Movie

Photo of Justin Timberlake

JustJared.com reports that Justin Timberlake just had lunch with Bryan Singer, who is going to direct and produce the film version of Battlestar Galactica. Jared thinks that Justin may get a part in the film, which is just mind-boggling.

But hey, why stop there? How about Lady Gaga as a Cylon, Beyonce as Commander Adama (in a bit of gender bending) and Britney Spears as the new Starbuck? It's Hollywood. It could happen.

Bryan Singer to Direct New Battlestar Galactica Film

Variety reports that Bryan Singer will direct a feature film version of Battlestar Galactica.
Battlestar_fleming Singer has long been intrigued with "Battlestar Galactica" and flirted with relaunching it into a TV series right after he directed the original "X-Men." Back in 2001 I wrote about his plan, which involved teaming with Tom DeSanto to exec produce the series. Singer planned to direct the pilot of the new version of a series that originally launched on ABC in 1978 and ran two seasons. Here is what he said at the time, comments that certainly proved prescient:

"The lesson I learned on `X-Men' is to have a healthy respect for the fan base of sci-fi fantasy franchises, and I'm confident that the `Galactica' brand is a sleeping giant. It was a show I watched during its initial run, from the pilot to the final episode. The essence and the brand name is quite potent in a climate where there's a great deficit of scifi programming."

It is possible that the timing of the series went awry because of the World Trade Center disaster that occurred later that year. Certainly, it made a series that launched with the attack and destruction of earth unpalatable. The director got busy on other projects. Ronald Moore came on as executive producer and oversaw the 73-episode series relaunch, which had a critically acclaimed run on Syfy.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Moore would be invited to write the screenplay, but it is clear that Singer will put his own creative stamp on the project as the studio indicates that the film will be "a complete re-imagination."
So if the film is a "complete reimagination" does that mean that all the actors will be recast and the storyline will be completely different? Didn't we just finish watching the entire Battlestar Galactica story on Syfy? Why is there going to be a feature film so soon after the show ended, if it's totally different? It's all most puzzling.

Variety says the film is on the fast track and that Singer is getting paid $10 million to do it.

Caprica Sneak Peek

SciFi Channel to Launch BSG Prequel

Caprica LogoEW.com reports that the SciFi Channel is planning a Battlestar Galactica prequel series called Caprica that will debut in 2010. The events in Caprica take place fifty years before the events in BSG.
The show is set 50 years before BSG and follows the lives of two rival families--the Graystones and the Adamas. That's right. We'll be following along with Admiral Bill Adama's father, Joseph, a civil liberties lawyer played by Esai Morales. At the start of the series, New Adama's got a real problem with the experiments being run by the head of the Graystone family, played by Eric Stoltz. That would be the same family whose computer company is developing some living robots called Cylons. Ever heard of 'em?

While the show will be futuristic, it's set in "a society recognizably close to our own" that's dealing with artificial intelligence and robotics. The network claims that it will "deliver all of the passion, intrigue, political backbiting and family conflict in television's first science fiction family saga."
Watching the early-stage robots and AI develop into the toasters could be interesting. You can see a trailer here on SciFi.com.

A Battlestar Galactica Primer

Salon has an in-depth primer about Battlestar Galactica which is quite interesting. There is a complete summary of the show so far, character descriptions and a list of nagging questions. Here's an answer to our most nagging question: who is the final Cylon?
Ronald Moore has promised he'll reveal the identity of the final Cylon before the end of the series. But here's what we know so far:

-- The final Cylon is familiar to Number Three. She recognizes it during her vision in the Temple of Jupiter. She says "You ... forgive me ... I had no idea ..." and tells Baltar that he was "right," before collapsing.

-- In the extended cut of "Razor," the hybrid claims that the "fifth [Cylon], still in shadow, will claw toward the light, hungering for redemption that will only come in the howl of terrible suffering."

-- In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Moore claims that the final Cylon is not on display in the promotional poster for the fourth season. Since the poster contains almost every major character in the "Galactica" universe, including Starbuck, Adama, Apollo and Roslin, this leaves us with either an as-yet-unknown Cylon character or a supporting character Cylon -- or Moore was leading us on.
How could the final Cylon not be a character that we know? Wouldn't that be sort of anti-climactic? In an interview Edward James Olmos joked that it was in his contract that he wouldn't be a Cylon. It can't be Adama, because that would just be ridiculous. Right???

Battlestar Galactica Premieres Early Online

Screen shot from Battlestar Galactica Season 4

Battlestar Galactica returns to television this Friday, April 4, 2008. But the producers are doing something a little different this time. Fans who just can't wait until the evening can watch the premiere online at SciFi.com starting at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time on Friday. Just tell your boss you have an important conference call to make from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Friday and close the door. Oh, and you might want to use earphones so that the robust sounds of an intense space battle don't blast all over your office. (Oh, and for frak's sake please don't write in to tell us that there is no sound in space because of the vacuum. We know -- and we don't care.)

Battlestar Galactica Cast to Visit David Letterman

Ten stars of Battlestar Galactica will descend upon the David Letterman show to present a Top Ten List on March 19th.
They include Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Michael Hogan, Aaron Douglas and Lucy Lawless. The show airs at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT.

The fourth season of Battlestar Galactica kicks off on March 28 at 10 p.m. ET/PT with two back-to-back half-hour specials, with the first new episode premiering the following week, April 4, 10 p.m.
We can't wait to see how the writers wrap up the series, although we admit we are a bit wary of they "getting to Earth" storyline that's been hinted at. Who is the missing Fifth Cylon? What do the Final Five want? Ron Moore says that the Final Five are "fundamentally different" than other Cylons, which is not terribly helpful.

Battlestar Galactica Fans Picket For WGA

The filkers were out in force, providing peppy musical accompaniment at the Writers' Strike picket line. Battlestar Galactica fans who were in town for a convention also joined the writers. In this short video, we see BSG creator Ron Moore and SF legend Harlan Ellison talk about the strike.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Ron Moore Talks Writers' Strike, Razor

Photo of Ronald D. MooreRon D. Moore, head writer/executive producer and creator of Battlestar Galactica has started a blog in which he talks about the writers' strike issues.
A quick update on the strike: the BSG writing staff has been on the picket lines for two weeks now and morale is pretty high. We're at the Barham gate to Universal Studios on the morning shift M-F this week (6:00 am to 10:00 am) and we’re getting a lot of response from passing cars -- lotta honking, sorry those of you living at Oakwood apts.

There's a BSG convention this weekend in Burbank, and there's been a lot of rumors out there about people from the con coming down to the picket lines. Just a few things on this subject for now: First of all, the rumored "3,000 fans" appearing on the line are a complete fabrication. I doubt the entire convention attendance will be that high. Second, the convention organizer is in no way coordinating this with WGA or anyone else. Third, the pickets are only in force M-F and this Friday will be ending at 1:00pm. Fourth, if anyone wants to come and show their support for the writers and our cause, they are more than welcome.
He also talks about the upcoming tv movie Razor:
Instead of the customary podcast commentary for next week's showing of "Razor," there will be a recording I made of the original break session where the writers first pitched me the story. The podcast was recorded at my house with the entire writing staff, minus Mrs. Ron, who opted not to know anything about the story until it was completed. A separate commentary track will be available on the DVD version that Michael Taylor and I recorded in the studio. (Don't worry, I brought along the obligatory bottle of scotch.)

So far, the response to "Razor" has been very positive from both the critics and from the few screenings that we’ve had, so I'm hopeful that it'll be well received by one and all.
Razor airs Saturday November 24th at 9 p.m. Eastern/8:00 p.m. Central time on the Sci-Fi Channel. We can't wait.

The New Battlestar Galactica Teaser is Here

Here is the teaser for the 2008 season of Battlestar Galactica. It looks fantastic and Katee Sackhoff is definitely back. And speaking of Katee, we just lover her on The Bionic Woman. In fact, we don't understand why she wasn't cast in the lead. She has more charisma than Michelle Ryan. Well, she does.

Battlestar Galactica to Live On in Comics

Battlestar Galactica will live on in comics after the upcoming final television season.
Dynamite Entertainment's Battlestar Galactica Season Zero will be released this month. The six issue comic will rewind to two years before the Cylon attack on Caprica and fill in some of the details leading up to the fateful war.

Aside from the comics, fans will soon have the Battlestar Galactica movie Razor to tide them over until the series returns in January. Razor will tell two stories: first, the story of Lee (Apollo) Adama's first mission as commander of the Pegasus, and second, the story of Admiral Cain and her conduct and misconduct in the wake of the Cylon attack.

Around the time of Battlestar Galactica: Razor's release, Sci-Fi will be preparing the webisodes for release. As with last seasons run, the webisodes will prep audiences for the events that await them in the fourth and final season of the Peabody award winning series.
Battlestar Galactica returns for its fourth and final season in January, 2008. And the writers had better be up to the task -- what with Starbuck showing back up in the season finale and the odd assortment of characters that were revealed to be Cylons. It'll either be totally awesome or total jump the shark time. We hope it will be amazing.

It's odd how much more likable the Cylons have become over time. Let's face it, the Cylons have the cooler ship, cooler technology and they are really quite interesting -- in a homicidal, sociopathic kind of way. And another thing: if the writers don't stop those endless "we're poor and out of food and medicine and/or the miners are revolting" storylines, we're going to need tranquilizers.
